A virus is responsible for causing the rabies infection, which affects the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) of mammals, including humans. If not treated before symptoms arise, the infection is nearly always deadly. Animals that become infected with rabies can spread the disease through their saliva or through contact with brain tissue. It is rare for people living in the United States or Canada to get rabies, as it is more common in developing nations

1. Soap and Water:
One of the first things you should do when coming in contact with a suspected rabid animal is wash the scratch, bite, and open sore with soap and water. The next thing you should do is immediately call your doctor and local health department.

2.If the animal is domesticated, try to obtain the owner’s details. This will enable the public health authorities in the area to monitor the animal in a better manner

3. Chinese Herbs:
If you happen to have skullcap in your home, practitioners of Chinese medicine have used skullcap to treat rabies-related convulsions for centuries.

4.Echinacea Tea:
A tea brewed with Echinacea may help speed up the wound healing process of an infected bite, as well as give a boost to the immune system.

5.Garlic:
The natural antibiotic properties may help treat the aftereffects of a rabid dog bite. Some people have taken a few cloves of garlic three times daily to assist in wound healing.

6.Vaccination
The rabies vaccine should be given in every case of suspected exposure to rabies. The length of your vaccination course will depend on whether you have previously been vaccinated.
You should receive five doses of the vaccine if you've never been vaccinated. The first dose is given at the beginning of the treatment, followed by four further doses, which are given three, seven, 14 and 30 days after the start of treatment.
If you've previously been vaccinated, you should receive two doses of the vaccine. The first dose is given at the start of your treatment, followed by a second dose three to seven days later. The doses are given by injection into the shoulder muscle.
A common side effect of the rabies vaccine is redness, swelling and pain at the injection site, which occurs 24 to 48 hours after the injection has been given.

7.A fast-acting shot (rabies immune globulin) to prevent the virus from infecting you. Part of this injection is given near the area where the animal bit you if possible, as soon as possible after the bite.
A series of rabies vaccines to help your body learn to identify and fight the rabies virus. Rabies vaccines are given as injections in your arm. You receive four injections over 14 days.
