Tips For Improve Your Appetite

Loss of appetite can be described as a reluctance to eat anything. A person suffering from low appetite will not feel hungry which, in turn, decreases resistance mechanism of the human body and raises the chances of illness.
This condition can arise due to a number of factors. Some of them are sedentary lifestyle, aging, anxiety and depression, pregnancy, nausea, loss of smelling and tasting power, difficulty in swallowing, dehydration, radiation treatment, drug abuse, pain, medical conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma, jaundice, yellow fever, Addison’s disease, dementia, gastrointestinal infections, hypothyroidism, AIDS, kidney and liver failures, inflammation of gallbladder,  medications, stress, alcohol intake, smoking, physical inactivity, and extreme weather conditions .
There are several symptoms associated with loss of appetite. Some of them are fatigue, exceptional weight loss, constipation, breathing difficulty, acidity, loose motions, abdominal cramps, indigestion, cough, general malaise, mild fever, mood swings, rapid heart rate, dizziness, nausea, reduced urine output, etc.
Here are some simple home remedies for increasing the appetite in children and adults as well.
1.Ginger For Appetite

Ginger is a well known remedy for appetite because it cures indigestion. The active agent ‘zingerone’ in ginger grants it the medicinal properties. Since it is an effective anti-nauseant, it cures indigestion and appetite loss caused by nausea. At the same time, ginger cleanses the colon, regulates metabolism and cures an upset stomach. You can include ginger in your diet in a number of ways.
You can eat it raw or add it to curries. You can also prepare ginger tea by adding a crushed ginger root into your regular tea while boiling. To top it up, you can add cinnamon, anise seed and peppermint to your tea.

2.Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry, also known as amla, can help increase a diminished appetite caused by gastrointestinal issues. It works as a tonic in the GI system, improving the functioning of the digestive tract and detoxifying the liver. When combined with honey, it also reduces nausea and vomiting.
Moreover, being rich in vitamin C, it boosts the immune system and facilitates mineral absorption, both of which are important if nutritional deficiencies have resulted from lack of proper nourishment.
Mix two teaspoons each of Indian gooseberry juice, lemon juice and honey in a cup of water. Drink it daily in the morning on an empty stomach, at least for three to four months.
If using Indian gooseberry powder, put one tablespoon in a cup of water and let it sit overnight. In the morning, add two teaspoons of lemon juice and a dash of ground black pepper to it. Drink it regularly on an empty stomach for a few months.
You can also take this tangy and refreshing fruit in the form of pickle.

3.Black Pepper

Black pepper is often used as an Ayurvedic remedy to improve digestion, increase appetite, and treat gastrointestinal problems. It also relieves stomach and intestinal gas.
Basically, black pepper stimulates the taste buds, which in turn increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thereby improving digestion. Furthermore, it contains a compound called piperine that aids absorption of nutrients including selenium, beta-carotene and vitamin B.
Combine one tablespoon of jaggery powder and one-half teaspoon of ground black pepper.
Consume it on a regular basis for a few days.
Do not use this black pepper remedy if you have stomach ulcers or have had abdominal surgery.

4.Cinnamon For Appetite

Cinnamon stimulates your hunger. It does so by decreasing blood sugar level in the body. The active agent in cinnamon known as hydroxychalcone increases activity of insulin and maintains blood glucose levels at optimum state. Cinnamon also treats conditions like vomiting and nausea – both related to loss of appetite. There are several ways in which you can add cinnamon into your diet.  You can add cinnamon powder mixed with honey and sugar to your regular toast and relish the benefits. However, one should not take cinnamon along with other medications for lowering blood glucose. This may result in hypoglycemia.

5. Coriander

Coriander is a commonly used herb in most of the Indian cuisines (though, I dislike it with all my heart) as it is known to cure indigestion. You can also gulp down a glass of freshly prepared coriander juice on an empty stomach each morning. Coriander juice helps in the release of gastric enzymes which in turn improve appetite.

6. Figs

Dried or fresh, this fruit is a best home remedy to increase appetite. Dates also work the same way in enhancing an appetite. Both figs and dates are a part of weight gain diets and help stimulate appetite. Add a few to your salad to make it more interesting.

7.Drink lemon juice

Lemon juice stimulates digestion, treats related problems, and removes toxins from the body, purifies liver and kidney and improves the feeling to eat.

8. Dandelion Root

Dandelion root is known to promote digestion and regulate appetite. It also helps treat liver and gallbladder problems. It works as a mild diuretic as well.
Prepare dandelion root tea by boiling powdered dandelion root in a cup of water for about five minutes. You can also add a cinnamon stick.
Strain the tea. You may sweeten it with honey if you like before drinking it.
You can purchase dandelion root from a health food store. If you have dandelions growing in your yard, you can separate the roots from the foliage, clean and chop them into small pieces, and bake them in the oven at 250 degrees for two hours.
Before using this herb, consult your doctor to determine the right dose and be sure it will not interact with any medications you may be taking.

9.Pomegranate Juice

Though this one is not one of my favorites, it surely has helped many regain a healthy appetite. This ruby-red fruit, loaded with antioxidants and vitamins, makes a great rejuvenating drink. It also enhances the appetite naturally. Fresh pomegranate juice with honey works wonders for those lacking appetite.

10.Fenugreek For Appetite

It improves hunger, helps in correcting digestion process and relieve trapped gases. It increases appetite by lowering blood glucose levels which result in increased craving for carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates on the other hand increase insulin activity on the body. You can add some fenugreek seeds to your dishes and savour its taste and health benefits.
Fenugreek is also available in powder form. Eat a teaspoonful of fenugreek powder every morning for best results. However, one should regulate the quantities of fenugreek taken since it tends to drastically increase body weight.
