Dangers of Underarm Deodorants
Word travels fast on the Internet. As stories fly from inbox to inbox, they gain momentum and news sometimes blurs with fiction. A few years ago, an email began circulating that gave many readers reason to pause. It read:
"I just got information from a health seminar that I would like to share. The leading cause of breast cancer is the use of antiperspirant. Yes, ANTIPERSPIRANT. Most of the products out there are an anti-perspirant/deodorant combination so go home and check your labels."
1.Allergies
Many ingredients in underarm deodorants have the capacity to cause skin irritation, which can range from mild redness and burning sensation to a full allergic reaction. Aluminum, parabens, triclosan, silica, steareth, propylene glycol and talc are all possible allergens. Additionally, other less uniformly added ingredients may cause harm under the conditions of daily application, such as "fragrance," which, according to the Environmental Working Group, can encompass any number of harmful chemicals not required to be explicitly listed in the ingredients list.
2Chronic Headache
Can perfumes cause headaches? Harmful chemical content produces headaches, migraines (one side headache) and sinus headaches. Strong chemicals used for fragrance and odor not only causes instant headache while spraying. It also causes long-term frequent headaches.
3.Alternatives
Today many deodorant companies are finding alternatives to these contentious chemicals. Preservatives such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate can replace parabens. Tea tree oil has similar antibacterial properties to triclosan. And vegetable-based agents can replace propylene glycol. In addition, other natural alternatives are available, such as taking oral alfalfa tablets or applying crushed salt crystals.
4.Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol is used to increase absorption and helps keep substances from drying out. Interesting tidbit: this substance was originally formulated to be used as an anti-freeze.
Problem
Propylene glycol is a neurotoxin and skin irritant. It could cause damage to your central nervous system, heart, and liver.
5.Parabens
Parabens are found in many personal care items and are used a preservative.
problem
The problem with parabens is that they mimic estrogen in your body. Not good. Parabens can throw off your body’s hormonal balance. This can cause an early onset of puberty, increase your risk of hormonal cancers, and even birth defects in your future children.
6.Asthma
Researches says that one who uses strong deodorants or perfumes excessively are more prone to breathing diseases especially asthma. Sensitive chemicals or toiletries present in deodorants causes breathing troubles or nausea. Staying with those chemicals around us affects respiration and produces breathing problems.
