Flax Seeds Benefits for Health

Although Lilian Thompson, PhD, an internationally known flaxseed researcher from the University of Toronto, says she wouldn’t call any of the health benefits of flax "conclusively established," research indicates that flax may reduce risks of certain cancers as well as cardiovascular disease and lung disease.

1.Lowering cholesterol
 Researchers at the Iowa State University's Nutrition and Wellness Research Center found that cholesterol levels lowered among men who included flaxseed in their diet. Suzanne Hendrich, lead author of the study, said that for "people who can't take something like Lipitor, this could at least give you some of that cholesterol-lowering benefit."

2. Liver Disease

Flaxseed is rich in both soluble fiber (dissolves in water) and insoluble fiber (does not dissolve in water). According to Mayo Clinic3, "soluble fiber dissolves with water and creates a gel-like substance that helps to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels." Whereas insoluble fiber "absorbs water, which adds bulk to your digestive tract and helps to move things through quickly."

4. Depression
It’s true: Depression hurts. There are plenty of antidepressants that doctors may prescribe, but according to a Japanese study, simply adding flaxseed to your diet may also prove useful. Their study found that patients with significant depression levels also suffered from lower levels of docosahexaenoic and eicosapentanoic acids—the same acids that are found in various foods like fish, walnuts, and flax. Eat up, the theory goes, and it might help correct those imbalances.

5.Cancer
Recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. At least two of the components in flaxseed seem to contribute, says Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada.
In animal studies, the plant omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, called ALA, inhibited tumor incidence and growth.
