The Diets of People With Hemophilia, Diets for Hemophiliacs

Hemophilia

Eating a variety of healthy foods will help you get the energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber you need to grow and be healthy.

1.Vitamin C
(oranges, apples, kiwi fruit, spinach, blueberries, Brussels sprouts, strawberries, papaya, pineapple) – May improve blood clotting, and stimulates your body’s production of collagen, which may reduce the severity of bruising associated with hemophilia.

2.Change your oil
We all need oil. Get yours from fish, nuts, and liquid oils such as corn, soybean, canola, and olive oil. These are considered better fats because they can help reduce cholesterol.

3.High calcium
(milk, cheese, ice cream, soy milk, asparagus, tofu, yogurt, figs, broccoli, kale, dandelion greens) – Supports platelet formation and blood clotting, and may help prevent excessive wound bleeding.

4.Broccoli
Did you know broccoli is a great source of fiber and calcium? Try this delicious recipe for Broccoli Salad With Sesame Dressing and Cashews.

5.Stop Smoking
It is well documented that smoking is a major cause in a number of diseases and illnesses including heart disease, some lung diseases and several different types of cancer.
If you smoke and want to quit, see your GP who will offer plenty of advice and support to help you kick the habit or join an NHS Stop Smoking Service.
Smoking is bad for your health. You will be healthier if you quit!

6.Vitamin K (spinach, broccoli, turnip greens, cabbage, asparagus, dark green lettuce, oats, bran, alfalfa, soybeans, whole wheat breads, canola, soybean and olive oils, kelp, beef liver, green tea) – Helps produce prothrombin, which aids in blood clotting, and glycogen, which may help to improve liver function and blood clotting. Also good for controlling excessive bleeding.

7.Iron (grains, meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, legumes, nuts, soy products) – Key in forming part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
Watch how much you eat of these items as well. Increased weight strains your joints and muscles, and can lead to further complications, including bleeds in susceptible joints. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report teens and children with hemophilia in particular are almost twice as likely to become overweight as the general population.
